Friends of the Plaza Pool Community Education Sessions
Usually on the Second Saturday of each Month: Noon - 2:00 pm
As a result of funding which Friends of Plaza Pool has received from the Alpena County Youth and Recreation millage, we are able to offer 12 community education sessions during 2012. Each month, usually on the second Saturday, from 12 - 2 we will offer a topic specific program for community members. Approximately one hour will be dry land learning time and one hour will be in the pool, so do bring your suit and goggles with you. A donation of $2 for kids and $4 for adults is suggested. Below please find the topics for each session.
These monthly sessions are designed to provide information and practice about water related activity for all ages. Experts on the topic will introduce us to their passion and have us join them in or on the water to practice the skill involved. For most sessions there will be about one hour on the deck and one hour in the pool, so bring a suit and clothing appropriate for sitting on the bleachers. Suggested donation: $2 youth and $4 adult.January 14th: Lose the holiday "gain"

Course and in-water exercise tips by Krista Morrow-Aquatic DirectorNovember 10th: Expecting Mothers? Prenatal Water Workouts can help you and your baby!
If you are searching for a safe, low-impact exercise program you can follow all nine months, you might try heading to your local swimming pool. Swimming, water jogging, and aqua aerobics are some of the best exercises to perform while pregnant. Exercising in water is ideal for pregnant women because the water's buoyancy requires you to support only 50 percent of your body weight, it reduces the risk of stress-related injuries, and the compression of the water is soothing on joints and muscles that are stressed by the added bulk of your pregnancy. The water's temperature also keeps you from overheating during your workout. You don't need to be able to swim to participate in water workouts - many moves are performed in waist or chest-high water, and you don't even need to join a special organized class; simply swimming laps, or walking, jogging, or running in water will strengthen your core trunk muscles, legs and hips, and increase your cardio-respiratory fitness.
